Background & philosophy

About the album

A unique duo project recorded in the calm by lake Nedingen in Sweden — a tribute to stillness, presence and a long friendship between two musicians.

The CD “SLOW — Ballads by the Lake” is a unique project born from the long-standing friendship between Lutte Berg and Paolo Innarella. While visiting Sweden for a series of concerts at Lutte’s invitation, Innarella was deeply inspired by the surrounding pristine nature, and the idea of recording a duo album right there, in Lutte Berg’s lakeside studio, was born.

The aim was to create an album consisting entirely of ballads, far away from the frenetic pace of modern life.

The lake as protagonist, and the tempo of stillness

The music is performed by the two musicians, yet the true protagonist is the lake itself. The tranquility of the environment and the unhurried tempo dictated by the lake create a sound of profound inner peace.

Paolo Innarella

Paolo Innarella started his studies as a classical flautist and graduated with top marks (10/10) in transverse flute. Shortly thereafter he embarked on a musical journey that led him to the saxophone and to jazz — becoming a world class jazz flautist performing with musicians such as Mike Mainieri, George Garzone, Eddie Henderson, Mick Goodrick and Ares Tavolazzi at numerous Italian and international festivals. He has released albums under his own name featuring his original compositions, such as “Melodic Art”, “Le Jardin Perdu” and “Mouche Bulle”, and composed the soundtrack for the film “Un paese ci vuole” by Vanni Vallino as well as co-composing the soundtrack for “Oasi” by Michele Bortone, screened at the Venice Film Festival.

Lutte Berg

Born to a Swedish mother and an Italian father, Lutte Berg moved to Italy at the age of 24 in search of his roots. During his 25 years in Italy he released five albums of original music under his own name, and as a guitarist he appears on countless recordings across jazz, pop and world music. His personal sound has taken him across the globe — New York, Hong Kong, Damascus, Aleppo, Algiers, Sanremo, Umbria Jazz and the Roccella Ionica Jazz Festival — playing with Paul McCandless, Antonello Salis, Baba Sissoko, Javier Girotto, Roberto Gatto, Ares Tavolazzi, Christian Spering and Peter Asplund among many others. He later settled in his maternal grandfather’s wooden cottage by lake Nedingen in Sweden and produced two more CDs of original music. The war in Syria and the 2015 refugee crisis inspired him to create the Flen World Orchestra, an initiative that captured the interest of the national media as well as the Swedish Royal Family.
